Amou comes from the edge of the Sahara – a loner whose father disappeared long ago in shame. He hangs out with Dongoulan the shaman, who warns of bad times ahead and reveals that only the legendary Blue Man can save them from Makhtan the sorcerer. When other villagers are turned into statues of sand, Amou goes into the desert in search of the Blue Man.
He’s joined by Dongoulan – transformed into his animal spirit as an irritable old camel. JoJo, a beautiful but insufferable girl from the village, appears as a vain jerboa and her kid brother Bouffo completes the team as a hyperactive puppy. Their journey takes them to Timbuktu and beyond – tricked along the way by the sorcerer and his incompetent comic djinn. Only when they reach his mountain citadel do they discover The Blue Man was Amou’s father – and Makhtan has killed him.
Amou is imprisoned in the citadel. He can only escape if he accepts he is the Blue Man. Using strength, cunning and skills learned along the way, he defeats the sorcerer, saves the village – and wins JoJo’s heart.
